Every business needs a way to get the word out, whether you’re promoting blog posts or you have actual products to sell. Want to create a solid marketing plan? Here are the steps you’ll need to take.
1. Determine Your Goals
What is it that you want to accomplish with your marketing? Write down a short list of goals. You’re going to refer back to these goals several times throughout this process.
2. Audit Your Current Content
What are you doing that’s working? What isn’t making a difference? Do you need new web hosting so that you can build a better blog? You may even want to delete some content that no longer fits with your brand. Refer to your goals from step one. Everything you do should align with your goals.
3. Choose Your Audience
Who will you target? Where will you find them? What are they interested in?
4. Decide What Will Provide Value
Once you know what your audience is interested in, you’ll be able to determine what type of content will provide value. You should have a mix of curated and created content. Articles and blog posts, along with other resources, can be curated from outside sources. Your content can then build on those ideas or fill in information gaps.
5. Create an Editorial Calendar
You should have an editorial calendar completed at least one month in advance. If you don’t have experience creating an editorial calendar, work with a contractor. You can either hire a freelancer to regularly create your calendars and content, or you can have them teach you how to go about it yourself.
6. Create the Content
Eventually, you’ll need to actually create all that content you planned out! Again, if you’re not a writer or you don’t have time to handle the workload, work with a contractor or appoint some of your staff to take care of content creation.
7. Promote Your Content
By using paid advertising on Google and social media, promoting your content on your social media profiles, and developing a newsletter strategy, you can start to get your content out to y social media, our audience.
8. Measure, Measure, Measure
Everything you do should be measured. Install Google Analytics on your blog, regularly check your stats with each social media platform’s built-in analytics, and review your newsletter stats a few days after the blast goes out. When you notice trends, whether they’re working for you or against, refine your marketing strategy to make the most of your efforts.
Once you have a strategy in place, go over it regularly to make sure it’s still aligned with everything from your goals to your analytics. Over time, you may change your goals. If you promote different products, you could require a different strategy for each launch. You’ll also want to refine your process as your analytics start to change or as different platforms create new guidelines.
