Deployment of spy apps in the workplace does come off as an attractive idea, especially if your business is suffering due to your employees dedicating an unacceptable amount of time to personal phone calls, messages, and web surfing. However, keeping tabs on your employees’ cell phones is not guaranteed to bring you the desired results. On the contrary, it can create even more problems for you and your business. Let’s take a look at why keeping an eye on employees’ usage of cell phones is not an ideal move.

Privacy Invasion

First thing that you do upon installing a mobile phone spy app on your employees’ device is that you strip them of their privacy. You get access to their call details, messages, browsing history, etc., something you can’t really expect them to be okay with. They may put up an act of being cool with it and all in the start, but it will only be a matter of time before they stop making an effort to hide their frustration over you keeping tabs on their private communications. They will start to feel insecure and instead of focusing on work, they may start to look for ways to beat the employee monitoring system that you’ve imposed on them. There is no denying the fact that a lot of employees have a tendency to be lazy and waste time on cell phones, but to punish the entire workforce by deploying spy apps just because of a few bad apples is unjust and therefore bound to be met with resistance.

The Impact Can Weaken Over Time

You take huge risk by installing spy apps on your employees’ cell phone (assuming they’re company-owned cell phones of course), hoping that it will resolve your business problems, single out time wasters, and encourage everyone to stay focused on assigned tasks. In the beginning, this may work because it’s something new and people fear that they might lose their job if caught stepping out of line. However, soon after, the fear starts to fade and employees go back to doing whatever it was that they were doing before, rendering the whole exercise of deploying spy apps in the workplace completely useless. Your investment goes to waste and you don’t get to reap any benefit out of it. It means that you invaded your employees’ privacy and staked your reputation to gain absolutely nothing.

Doubts Over Your Ability to Lead

One of the biggest drawbacks of spying on your employees’ cell phones is that it puts your own reputation at risk. Seeking help from a third-party app is basically you acknowledging the fact that you don’t have what it takes to manage the employees on your own, which in turn makes you look really weak. You are a leader and your employees expect you to act like one. However, as soon as you get help from spy apps, you lose your respect among your subordinates, and it is more than likely that they will stop taking you seriously going forward. They are sure to feel uncomfortable being led by a leader they have no respect for. Some of them might even leave the company after they become convinced that you don’t have what it takes to be the lead. So save yourself, your business, and the faith that your employees have in your leadership skills by refraining from stooping to what is generally seen by employees as a desperate measure.
