The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days

by George Ambler on Sunday, June 15, 2008

The Leading Blog has an interesting post “How to Survive the First 100 Days As the New Boss” discussing the book “The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days” by Peter Fischer. A guide to help leaders to effectively manage leadership transitions, the chart below provides and overview of some of the issues addressed in the book:

Executives Who Make
Transitions Successfully
Executive Who Are Less
Successful in Transitions
  • Possess superior knowledge and familiarity with the field and readily distinguish between what is important and what is not
  • Recognize and develop key relationships, deal adroitly with hidden rivals and predecessors, build networks in the organization, and show that they are team-oriented
  • Know how to group the many issues and problems into a vision and to motivate the employees
  • Communicate with senior management on strategy and style of leadership
  • Have knowledge about the process of changing leadership and impart confidence and trust because they can assess developments
  • Often come from outside the field and take too long to get their bearings

  • Focus too much on the tasks to be accomplished, neglect the development of working relations built on trust, and tend to prefer to work things out alone
  • Pursue too many approaches at the same time without a persuasive strategy and focus on eliminating weak points

  • Accept unclear expectations from senior management

  • Are too easily surprised, concentrate only on changes and thereby neglect the employees’ need for stability and security

Transitions happen to us all as leaders and it’s important to be equipped with the tools and knowledge required to help navigate the leadership transitions effectively. This book help to navigate the most common leadership transition, the transition to be the new boss. Another great book on effectively managing leadership transition which I reviewed on this blog here is the book The First 90 Days.

George –

Thanks for pointing me the Fischer book – I’ll check it out. I’ve used The Fist 90 Days as a resource, and have also done a little of my own research on recently hired executives. Being clear on expectations is at the top of my list, as well as listening and having a support network.
Coming in with an arrogant “I’m here to save you, I did it this way at my last company and it’ll work here too, and I’m not interested in your ideas” attitude is a surefire career killer.
